Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Republican lawmakers introduced legislation Protect Medicaid Act, which will prevent American citizens from subsidizing programs that expand healthcare benefits to illegal immigrants.

Protect Medicaid Act would prohibit states from using federal funds to use for state Medicaid benefits for illegal immigrants paid by American citizens.

The legislation introduced comes after California is expected to become the first state in the U.S. to expand healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants ages 19-25.

“Federal law already bars illegal immigrants from receiving Medicaid, but states like California get around federal law by using state funds to extend Medicaid benefits to illegal immigrants,” said Cassidy’s press release. ”If a state chooses to give Medicaid to benefits to illegal residents, the bill ensures that state does so entirely on its own dime, without any cost to taxpayers in other states.”

California is set to use $98 million of the $213 million of the state’s federal and tax money for healthcare coverage for low-income illegal immigrants.

“Governor Newsom’s plan is a giant magnet for more illegal immigration, and it will hurt California citizens who depend on Medicaid,” said Cassidy. ”The plan is unfair to vulnerable Americans and it’s not fair to middle-class families paying taxes, taking care of them should be our priority.”

California lawmakers proposed taxing Americans in the state who do not have health insurance.

“Governor Newsom’s proposal to reward illegal aliens with Medicaid Benefits is nothing more than political grandstanding,” said Sen. David Perdue (R-GA). “We will not stand idly by and watch California and other sanctuary states skirt federal law to dole out taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal aliens.”

Newsome rejected a proposal that would expand Medical benefits to illegal immigrants up to ages 65 and older due to cost which were estimated to be around $3.4 billion, according to BBC News.

“Safety nets like Medicaid should exist to serve only Americans,” said Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OKLA).”States like California should not be allowed to expand federal welfare benefits to illegal immigrants when the programs are expressly provided for citizens.”
