Opinion: Top 10 Reasons Why Conservatives and Liberals Should Be Skeptical in Supporting the BLM Organization
The “Black Lives Matter” organization hides behind a noble-sounding name. The name itself is misleading and makes a straw man argument in society; that there is a common belief by non-Blacks and police (of all races), that believe Black lives “don’t matter.” It’s simply not true and it’s causing unnecessary division. Let’s discuss the top 10 reasons why conservatives and liberals should be skeptical when supporting the “Black Lives Matter” organization.
1. BLM on the Nuclear Family
The organization Black Lives Matter (BLM) states on their webpage that one of their goals is to “dismantle the nuclear family.”
BLM’s website reads the following:
“We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.”
Firstly, the “nuclear family” is not exclusive to the “Western world.” Dismantling the very institution that research has consistently demonstrated is most likely to strengthen and empower American children (of all races) is a losing strategy to push.
2. Police Brutality
Police brutality is abhorrent. Those that abuse the badge should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. I think this is something all sides of the political spectrum can agree on.
However, police brutality is not a leading problem plaguing “Black America” today. There is also no structural bias in the criminal justice system with regard to race. Let’s analyze the data listed below:
- A Harvard professor analyzed more than 1,000 officer-involved shootings across the country and concluded there was zero evidence of racial bias.
- A 2015 Justice Department analysis found white police officers less likely to shoot unarmed Black suspects than Black or Hispanic officers.
- A 2019 study from the National Academy of Sciences showed that there is no significant evidence of an anti-Black disparity in the likelihood of being fatally shot by police.
- Washington Post’s analysis of crime statistics showed that 12% of whites and Hispanics who die of homicide are killed by police, vs. just 4% of Blacks.
- A police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.
- In 2019, 0.1% of black homicides were unarmed victims in fatal police shootings.
3. Defund the Police
BLM has actively called for defunding the police, a policy not supported by most on the right. Some of their leaders have also actively called to abolish law enforcement altogether.
How does defunding the police help advance the Black community? Wouldn’t crime expand unchallenged, bringing terror to the most vulnerable? The BLM “movement” does not present a good argument when it comes to defunding or abolishing law enforcement.
Those that are a part of BLM “movement,” that riot, loot, and burn down their own communities while chanting “DEFUND THE POLICE,” are definitely not winning anyone over with their violent actions.
A recent poll taken earlier this year concluded that 81% of Black Americans don’t want less police presence despite protesters but instead want MORE police.
4. Which Black Lives Matter?
The BLM organization is also very selective on which Black lives “matter,” to them.
Black-on-Black violence is the leading cause of homicide, not police shootings which they are known for notoriously fighting against. If Black lives “matter,” why aren’t the problems that are plaguing their inner city communities being addressed as vigorously as police brutality?
5. Refusal to Condemn the Riots
BLM has continuously refused to condemn the rioting, looting, and the burning down of many minority-owned businesses that have occurred during their many “protests”, most recently in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
In fact, these protests-turned-riots resulted in more Black lives unnecessarily being taken a week after George Floyd protests began than all the unarmed Black men shot by police in 2019.
Recently, a BLM organizer in Chicago justified looting at Gucci and Macy’s, stating that these businesses have insurance and referred to the looting as a form of “reparations.”
6. Questionable Leaders
Hawk Newsome warned America on a televised interview with Martha MacCallum on Fox News and stated the following:
“We’ll burn the system down if the U.S won’t give us what we want.”
Making threats on national television is definitely not going to appease your critics or inspire them to support your “movement.”
In April of 2016, BLM activist Charles Wade was arrested for allegedly trafficking an underage girl for sex in College Park, Maryland. He was charged with seven counts, including felonies for human trafficking. The operation was discovered by undercover agents. Does the BLM organization not vet those that are representing them?
In a surfaced video dated back to 2015, Patrisse Cullors, Co-BLM founder admitted that her and co-founder Alicia Garza, along with their fellow organizers, are ‘‘trained Marxists.”
Karl Marx’s ideas led to the rise of some of the most brutal dictators in world history like Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Castro. Marxist regimes murdered about 100 million people and enslaved billions. Being a “trained Marxist,” isn’t something to be proud of.
7. Supporters of Venezuela Dictator
Black Lives Matter founder, Opal Tometi has a lengthy history of being an open supporter of socialist Venezuela Dictator Nicolás Maduro. Maduro’s dictatorship and poor leadership corrupted Venezuela’s once-democratic institutions to collapse.
On April 14, 2013, Nicolás Maduro was elected President of Venezuela. Since the end of 2015, More than four million Venezuelans have fled their country amid an economic and humanitarian crisis, mostly to other Latin American countries like Colombia and Peru.
Maduro’s continual disregard for basic human rights that include arbitrary arrests, media censorship of those who have spoken out against him, imprisonment of those who have opposed him, and even using lethal force against peaceful protesters.
Venezuela’s economy has deteriorated at such an alarming rate that it has caused a scarcity of food, medicine, and basic necessities. Crime has skyrocketed, and freedom of the press is almost nonexistent.
Why on earth would someone that claims to fight against “injustice” and “oppression,” support a dictator such a Nicolás Maduro?
8. Black Power
The BLM movement founders have made their message loud and clear that they’re building “Black power” across the country. It’s literally plastered all over their website.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Perhaps BLM “leaders” should brush up on MLK infamous speeches a bit.
Martin Luther King Jr. promoted “God’s power and human power,” and he promoted equality for all not special treatment for those that possess more melanin than others.
How does a government check erase hundreds of years of slavery?
Why should the descendants of White Americans be in debt for a sin that is not of their own, but rather of their long dead relatives?
Every race and society in history has owned slaves so will reparations only be applied to Black Americans? Doesn’t seem fair to me.
According to a new Gallup poll, just 29% are in favor of cash payments to Black Americans descended from slaves.
10. Economic Inequality
According to the BLM website. The movement is focused on combating “economic injustice” against Black Americans. Currently under the Trump administration, Black American unemployment reached a record low. Yet, you will be hard-pressed to find a BLM supporter that also supports President Trump, who has brought Black Americans the most prosperity in U. S. history.
There are already laws set in place which protect Americans from being discriminated against their race, gender, sex, age, disability, etc. Affirmative action policies also highly favor minority groups that help increase job opportunities for them.
The most recent study by Pew Research concluded that Black immigrants are more successful in America than Black Americans. If Black foreigners can become successful in America why can’t Black Americans? What specifically is holding Black Americans back from achieving economic prosperity?
First off, let me just say that a movement that truly fights for social justice should be applauded, but when a movement starts making “unreasonable demands” in the name of “justice” and “equality,” that’s when we should be skeptical and ask ourselves if there is a politically motivated agenda behind that “movement.”
