Nintendo has implemented new user guidelines for ‘Animal Crossing’ which now restricts players from using the game for business purposes, expressing their political beliefs and/or gaining any financial advantage.

“Animal Crossing: New Horizons” has become a well-recieved game since its release in March. According to Business Insider the game quickly picked up popularity by selling over 13 million worldwide copies in just the first 6 weeks.

With its release at the beginning of the pandemic, many users found the game helpful to imagine themselves in the middle of an “island paradise” to avoid the reality of a lockdown amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A month before the presidential elections, it was announced that the Joe Biden Campaign would be launching a virtual office in ‘Animal Crossing’, which would be considered Joe Biden’s headquarters. The Verge spoke with the director of digital partnerships, Christian Tom, regarding the Biden-Harris campaign.

“We are continuing to reach out to voters across the country wherever they are — including on Animal Crossing,” Tom said.

He explained that the Biden headquarters would be its own island dedicated to the presidential candidate so that many of Biden’s ’Animal Crossing’ followers could support.

The campaign first began by creating Biden yard signs which allowed users in the game to download and place on their virtual home. Following the yard signs, the ‘Biden island’ was released in October, which included a look into Biden’s house and campaign office surrounded by Biden-Harris posters.

Voting polls could be seen in the virtual campaign office, along with a voting checklist to get users to think about their preferred voting technique. The Biden Campaign sought to get voters by using this technique of calling on many young people to vote in November.

However, Nintendo released a statement on Nov. 9, on behalf of the “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” game, in which they stated the new user guidelines that have now been implemented.

The guidelines range from addressing how businesses and organizations may use the game to how players can engage in activities, such as:

“Please refrain from using the Game inappropriately or creating any content within the Game that would be considered vulgar, discriminatory, or offensive. Please also refrain from bringing politics into the Game.”

The statement warns users that they must comply with the restrictions otherwise “appropriate actions” would be made. Nintendo does note that guidelines may be revised as the community changes.
