The five-year-old weekly vendor market, Smorgasburg, is coming back to the parking lot of the Alameda Produce Market in Downtown Los Angeles on July 4.
Smorgasburg has been closed since mid-March 2020, but with California’s reopening comes not only the revival of the five-acre merchant extravaganza, but also the Californian entrepreneurial spirit.
Despite L.A. experiencing the most business closures since the start of the pandemic, General Manager of Smorgasburg L.A, Zach Brooks, told Scriberr News that “it was amazing to see how many of our vendors thrived and pivoted and just figured it out with it all.”
This is true for both businesses that existed pre-Covid, and also for a new crop of vendors who were inspired in spite of the circumstances and who will be welcomed to the scene this July.
For the past 15 months, hundreds of small businesses like the ones that will appear at Smorgasburg have been working out of their homes, delivering food, shipping hand-made items, opening pop-ups and adapting to a ‘new normal.’
The return of Smorgasburg, however, gives a physical destination for these types of businesses to ‘strut their stuff’ every Sunday.
“[Smorgasburg] still takes the threat of COVID incredibly seriously,” Brooks said.
He noted the five-acre outdoor area is safer than being indoors, but said “it’s natural to feel a little trepidation, but we plan on following the guidelines for the county.”
During a virtual media briefing held on June 10, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, said “if you haven’t had a vaccine, you really should be wearing a mask, or two masks, if that’s comfortable for you… a mask will do a lot to protect you.”
Brooks said their main focus right now is on hiring.
“We’re not only hiring for our Sunday staff, but we are also trying to help our vendors find staff as well,” he said.
“We pride ourselves on being an incubator for new businesses, so we’re excited to get back open for them.”
Smorgasburg LA is not a pet-friendly event, and will be located at 777 S. Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90021.
